A HOTEL that has been used to house migrants is set to announce its reopening to the public following a refurbishment.

The Ibis Styles Hotel, in Haydock, has been used to host migrants in recent years.

It was one of a number of hotels used across the country due to the number of people entering the UK illegally or claiming asylum increasing.

However, Ibis has confirmed that it is set to announce its reopening in "due course".

An exact timeline for this and the end date of Ibis Styles' contract with the Home Office has not been disclosed, with the hotel saying it is to undergo a "refurbishment" ahead of the reopening.

A spokesperson for Ibis Styles Haydock said: "We are set to announce the reopening of the Ibis Styles Haydock, following refurbishment, in due course."

When asked, a St Helens Council spokesman said the matter was an arrangement between the hotel and the Home Office and referred the Star on.

The Government confirmed in October last year that a first 50 hotels across the UK will stop housing immigrants by the end of January due to a reported drop in illegal channel crossings.

However, latest figures show the number of migrants that have arrived in the UK so far in 2024 after crossing the channel has reached a new record high for the first three months of a calendar year.

In the town, the OYO Lakeside Haydock Hostel, on Garswood Old Road, off the East Lancashire Road, at Carr Mill, has also been used to house migrants.
