FIREFIGHTERS have been tackling a blaze at a house on a St Helens street this afternoon, (Saturday, May 11).

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended an incident on Sandringham Drive, St Helens at around 12.21pm.

Three fire engines arrived at the scene while two firefighters entered the property after reports that smoke could be seen coming from the back window of the house and the smoke alarm could be heard.

Fire crews found a dishwater alight in the ground floor kitchen of the property which they extinguished using a hose reel jet.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended an incident on Sandringham Drive, St Helens on the afternoon of Saturday 11th May.

“Crews were alerted at 12.13 and on scene at 12.21, with three fire engines attending.

“On arrival, two firefighters entered the property wearing breathing apparatus (BA) and used one hose reel jet under rapid deployment after reports of smoke issuing from the rear window of the property and the smoke alarm could be heard.

“This was a dishwasher involved in fire in the ground floor kitchen.

“The fire has now been extinguished and 4 firefighters in BA were committed to search the property.

“Following a thorough search, all persons were accounted for, gas and electricity was isolated and mechanical ventilation ensued.

“The incident was scaled down and remaining crews ventilated the premises.

“Crews then carried out home fire safety checks at the neighbouring and affected property, before leaving the scene at 13.25pm.”
