A FREIGHT train is reported to have derailed in Wigan, causing disruption on the railway lines.

At around 12.30pm on Wednesday, May 8, Northern Rail announced that a train had derailed in the Wigan area.

It is reported that the vehicle was a freight train, which has resulted in severe disruption as some railway lines are now blocked.

Train services running through Wigan have been cancelled or revised, and all stations between Wigan North Western and St Helens Central will not be served for the next few hours.

Road replacement buses have been implemented between Wigan and St Helens Central, in both directions.

Services will still take place between St Helens Central and Liverpool Lime Street, although delays are expected due to the incident.

Northern Rail has estimated that the line between St Helens Central and Wigan North Western will reopen at around 6pm.

The British Transport Police has been contacted for further information about the freight train.
