A MAN was punched in the face after a road rage incident descended into violence.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man suffered several fractures to his face following the attack earlier this month.

At around 7.40pm on Friday, February 9, officers received a report that a 44-year-old man had been assaulted after a dispute on Scorecross Road.

It was reported that the victim was almost involved in a collision with a man who was driving a white Volkswagen Caddy as they were leaving McDonald's via Burtonhead Road on St Helens Linkway.

The man then followed the victim in a white Volkswagen transporter van across the roundabout on to Scorecross Lane.

When the victim stopped an argument ensued where he was hit twice by the man.

The victim suffered serious several fractures to his face which required hospital treatment.

CCTV inquiries were carried out by police in the area in a bid to identify the offender. Detectives have described the suspect as above 6ft 4 inches with a large muscley build. He had a bald round head, and a long wiry beard that was brown in colour. 

Detectives are now appealing for witnesses who saw the incident and has any dashcam footage from Friday, February 9, that captured the assault.

They have today, February 26, released a still of the suspect's van.

Detective Inspector Richard Shillito said: "This appears to have been a road rage incident which escalated into a violent attack on a man who suffered significant injuries his face. 

“The incident happened on a Friday evening when people may have been going out, therefore I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack to think about what they may have seen as it could be vital.

“Similarly, if you have any dashcam or CCTV footage that could have captured the incident or the cars involved please check your systems and contact police if you have any evidence.

“Information from our community is vital if we are to stop people who cause such violence on our streets.”
