A LARGE police presence was in the centre of Rainhill this morning as the investigation into the death of a 33-year-old man continues.

As the Star reported earlier today, officers received a report at about 2.40am on Monday that a man had sustained injuries inside a home on Warrington Road, Rainhill.

He was taken to hospital but his death was confirmed a short time later. His next of kin have been informed, police say.

St Helens Star:

Detectives say an investigation is in its "very early stages and the death is currently being treated as unexplained".

A post-mortem will take place to establish how the man died.

Shortly after 11am today a significant police presence remained in the village's centre, as shown in these pictures.

A cordon of around 20 metres long was in place across Warrington Road in the centre of Rainhill village, meaning a number of businesses had to remain closed.

Two Merseyside Police scientific support vehicles and a mobile police station were stationed outside of the cordon.

Groups of police could be seen heading into a building entrance where a blue tarpaulin sheet was lying nearby.

Police said that as part of the "ongoing investigation" officers will be carrying out house-to-house and CCTV enquiries.

The closure is causing some traffic disruption in the area.
