BULLDOZERS have been flattening properties on an estate where a redevelopment is planned.

Housing group Torus is demolishing 61 homes on the Gerards Bridge estate, in order to push forward with a proposed redevelopment of the area.

Video footage and photographs have captured the demolition at the site as it progresses.

As the developer owns many of the properties on the estate that lies between North Road and College Street, the majority of residents have been rehomed in recent years.

However, some homeowners told the Star in January they felt stuck in the middle of a crumbling, derelict estate that is being demolished all around them and unsure of their plans.

Torus has cited "loss of revenue" and "high ASB (anti-social behaviour) issues" at the estate as reasons behind the demolition and plans to redevelop the site.

The properties lined up for demolition include 1 to 33 Union Street; 2 to 48 Union Street; 1 to 13 Fox Place; 2 to 14 Fox Place and 107 to 117 College Street.

In a previous statement to the Star, Chris Bowen, managing director at Torus Developments, said: "As a housing developer, our focus has and always will be building great, affordable homes and that is what we will continue to do at Union Street.

“Following clearing the site, we will collaborate with residents and the local community to create plans for an affordable housing scheme that will positively contribute to the areas future."
