THESE pictures could give an indication of where a temporary bus station could possibly be created in St Helens.

As reported last week, exploratory ground investigations have begun this week at Chalon Way West in St Helens town centre as part of "essential preparatory" work for Phase 1 of the town centre regeneration scheme.

A temporary station will be needed while the current Bickerstaffe bus station is demolished and rebuilt.

The Star has highlighted previously that St Helens Council and Merseytravel have been locked in talks over the plans for the temporary station and how it could be created around Chalon Way West.

However, the location was not clear.

But with site investigations underway this week, pictures showed work crews operating around the site of disabled parking pays behind Church Square car park and the Nelson pub.

In a statement issued to the Star earlier this week, the council said: "To enable the works to take place safely and with minimal disruption, three taxi spaces and three accessible parking bays on Chalon Way West will be temporarily out of use for the duration of the investigations.

"While most of Chalon Way West’s accessible parking bays will remain in use, Blue Badge holders are being encouraged to consider using alternative on-street accessible parking bays on nearby Bridge Street and other available facilities across the town centre during this time.

"Chalon Way West is being considered as a potential location for a temporary hub from which bus services operate during the construction of the town’s new, modern multi-modal transport interchange."

In December 2023, St Helens Borough Council and its partner The English Cities Fund submitted a Reserved Matters planning application for the first phase of the £90m regeneration of St Helens.

The planning application covers 24-acres that will be transformed with a new Market Hall flanked by a mixed-use area set around a 120-bedroom globally branded hotel, 64 stunning new homes, a 75,000 sq ft office and 11,000 sq ft of modern retail space, along with extensive high quality public spaces.
