ST HELENS saw around three per cent of fly-tipping incidents result in a fine last year.

Data recently released by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) reveals how many fly-tipping incidents there were in each part of England.

What does the St Helens data say? 

There were 1,901 total incidents of fly-tipping reported in St Helens for 2022-23, with 1,574 total actions.

Of these, 61 resulted in a total fixed penalty notice being imposed, with no prosecutions.

This amounted to a ratio of 0.032088 penalty notices being issued per incident.

This gave St Helens a ranking of 102nd across local authority areas in England in terms of its ratio of fines issued per fly-tipping incident.

St Helens came 99th overall for the total number of fixed penalty notices for fly-tipping issued.

The overall number of fly-tipping incidents in St Helens increased for the year 2022-23, with 258 more than the 1,643 reported in St Helens during the previous 12 months up to March 2022.

How does St Helens compare with neighbouring areas?

Neighbouring Knowsley was ranked 231st for the number of fines per incident, with 2,544 incidents, and seven penalty notices issued, with five prosecutions, amounting to 0.0022739 penalty notices per action.

Meanwhile, nearby Wigan was ranked 78th for fines per incident, with 107 fixed penalty notices and four prosecutions from 2,300 incidents, amounting to 0.046522 fines per incident.

Warrington was ranked 107th, for fines per incident, with 13 penalty notices and five prosecutions arising from 1,407 actions.

The city of Liverpool was ranked 255th for penalty notices per incident. There were 23,404 incidents, and 24 fines issued, a ratio of 0.001025.
