TEMPERATURES dropped to -5C in parts of St Helens as the wintry weather continued its icy grip.
The mercury had dipped to -3C in some parts by early evening on Wednesday and dropped further as the night wore on.
It has left some untreated roads and pavements treacherous.

Throughout today temperatures, according to the Met Office, will still be -3C at 9am and it will be 1pm before it gets above freezing.
Conditions should remain dry, with sunshine through the daytime.
With road surface temperatures forecast to reach as low as -5 overnight, our gritters have just set out to treat seven key routes across 178 miles of local road network.

It is expected to be -3C through the evening and night, with Friday set to be another bitterly cold day.
By Saturday afternoon temperatures should begin to rise again.
