STRONG winds have started to blow in St Helens ahead of tomorrow's Yellow Warning as Storm Pia is set to hit the country.

The Met Office has put in place a warning for strong winds across a large swathe of the UK on Thursday, causing some travel disruption.

Locally, gusts at a peak of 51 mph are expected in St Helens at 6am on Thursday morning.

Winds are expected to stay around the 40 to 50mph mark for much of tomorrow, before dropping into the 30s on Friday.

There have been strong gusts in the town today already, with winds reaching 40 mph.

What the Met Office says to expect

  • Some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected
  • Some short term loss of power and other services
  • Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges
