A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and assault after a woman was reportedly attacked at a house.

Police were called to an address in St Helens town centre this morning to reports of the alleged attack.

Officers say a woman had suffered several injuries to her face, head and legs and was taken to hospital.

A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and criminal damage.

In a statement, a Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "A man has been arrested following an assault at a house in St Helens.

"At around 7.40am this morning (Wednesday, November 22) we received a report that a woman had been attacked by a man inside a house in St Helens overnight.

"The woman was taken to hospital after suffering several injuries to her face, head and legs.

"A 33-year-old man from St Helens was later arrested at his home on suspicion of assault, criminal damage offences and attempted rape.

"He has been taken to a police station in Merseyside where he remains in custody.
