A MUSIC Festival is inviting people to a journey through time celebrating St Helens’ music scene, past and present.

Taking place on September 16, ReCharged festival promises to be "a soul-stirring celebration of the borough’s rich musical heritage".

The festival will be presented in three distinct parts, with the main show taking place on the evening of Saturday, September 16 at The Citadel, Waterloo Street, between 7pm and 11pm.

It will aim to transport music lovers back to the late 80s and early 90s, an era that gave birth to bands and artists who emerged from St Helens.

The evening lineup includes renowned acts such as Poisoned Electrick Head, Android 80, The Bordellos, Dan Wilson & The Counterfactuals, and TUT.

Organisers believe the historic Citadel, known for its cultural significance and pivotal role in the artistic landscape, serves as the perfect backdrop for this unforgettable voyage into the past.

Brian Carney, of Android 80 and also a founding member of Poisoned Eletrickhead, who now resides in Belgium is returning to his hometown for the gig.

He said: "I am excited to take the stage at the ReCharged festival, where we will celebrate and validate the creative eruption that defined St Helens during the 80s and 90s.

"The Citadel has hosted many of my memorable performances, making ReCharged an immensely nostalgic gig for me."

Leading up to the main event, St Helens Library in the World of Glass becomes a chamber for local talent.

Between 11.30 am and 1.30pm, people can indulge in free lunchtime performances by gifted local grassroots musicians.

Up-and-coming artists include Jessie Scarlet, Polker, Claire Wilcock, The Bathtub Gin Band and GracieMay.

Organisers are urging Star readers to support this showcase of talent and "help to foster a sense of community and camaraderie through shared musical experiences".

Councillor Anthony Burns, St Helens Borough Council's cabinet member for wellbeing, culture and heritage, said: "In its tenure as the 2023 Borough of Culture, we wanted an event to celebrate the musical heritage of St Helens, which was undoubtedly at its height during the late 80s and early 90s.

"While paying homage to this era and reminiscing, we also aspire to fuel a new generation of local musicians and creatives."

On the day there will also be a professional consultation event hosted by Liverpool City Region Music Board. ‘Let the Music Play’, between 1.30pm and 3pm, invites local music professionals, performers, and music-related businesses from St Helens to come together and contribute to the shaping of the borough’s vibrant music scene.

These events are a product of the Creative Underground project, underpinned by funding from Arts Council England and led by St Helens Borough Council Library and Archive Services.

As a result, the Citadel event is heavily subsidised, granting access to this exceptional experience for just £7.50 per person (plus £1 booking fee).
