A PLANNING application for a proposed 5G mast at a roadside grass verge has been withdrawn.

The plans were for a 15m-high monopole, with six antenna and three ground-based cabinets on land at Walkers Lane in Sutton Manor.

The application, by Three UK, sought to determine whether prior approval from St Helens Council is required as to the siting and appearance of the proposed monopole.

The plans stated: "As part of CK Hutchinson Networks (UK) Ltd continued network improvement program, there is a specific requirement for an installation at the road of Walkers Lane to ensure that the latest high-quality upgraded 4G service provision is delivered in this area of the town.

"The proposed column will also ensure that new 5G coverage can be provided at this location.

This ensures that coverage and capacity requirements are maintained and enhanced".

It said this site "will enable 5G coverage to be provided to this area of Sutton Manor".

The proposed mast "will be placed on a wide grass verge just off the road".

Plans added that "directly behind the site sits a patch of dense trees which will allow the mast to blend into the natural surrounding environment quite easily".

There is an existing 20.3m high street light on Walkers Lane on the same plot of land as the proposed instalment.

The plans stated: "It is acknowledged that the development may be visible from neighbouring residences and vistas within the surrounding streetscape.

"The proposed structure, although taller than the surrounding existing elements, would only be seen from relative proximity due to the low traffic and footfall.

"The proposed height of 15m is essential to provide coverage to the target coverage area and meet the operational and technical requirements of the surrounding cell."

They added: "It is therefore considered that the proposal before you strike a good balance between environmental impact and operational considerations.

"The proposed height and design represents that best compromise between the visual impact of the proposal and the surrounding area and meeting the operator’s technical requirements for the site."

A decision notice on the council's planning portal confirmed the application has been withdrawn.
