WORKERS at glass manufacturers are set to go on three separate strikes in July over a dispute over pay.

Glass cord manufacturer NGF Europe, whose factory is based on Lea Green Road, faces the industrial action.

Who is striking?

More than 170 workers at the Lea Green site, who are members of GMB union, have voted to down tools following a final offer from the company of 5.65 per cent plus as £850 non-consolidated payment.

Workers at other nearby NGF sites have been given a 6.75 per cent pay rise, says GMB who claim that staff at the St Helens site are "rightly angry".

When are the strikes?

Initial strike dates are as follows:

  • 6am July 2 – 6am July 4
  • 9pm July 8 – 9pm July 10
  • 9pm July 13 – 9pm July 14

A majority of 90 per cent of GMB members who voted supported strike action, GMB says.

'Workers are rightly angry'

Stephen Boden, GMB organiser, said: “This industrial action is a result of NGF putting profits before its workers”.

“The site is profitable with sales revenue up year on year.

“Other sites in the local area have been given more and St Helen’s workers are rightly angry.

“But it’s not too late for management to listen to workers and get back round the table with us to work out a fair deal.”

The Star has contacted NGF Europe in relation to the matter and has not yet received a comment.
