POLICE have named a suspect who was charged with arson after skips were reportedly set on fire at a tip.

Police said that a suspect had reportedly "rooted through" the skips at the Veolia Recycling Centre, in Newton le Willows.

Officers said that several of the skips were set alight on two separate nights at the tip on Junction Lane, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Police arrested a suspect, who was spotted by staff at the site, in connection with the erson incidents, which happened on June 2 and June 4.

David Bentham, of no fixed address, has been charged with two counts of arson.

Benrtham, 39, appeared at South Sefton Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

He has been remanded into custody and is due to next appear before Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday, July 5.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We can confirm a man has been charged with two counts of arson following incidents at Veolia Recycling Centre in Newton-le-Willows.

"There were two incidents of arson at the recycling centre on June 2 and 4.

"David Bentham, 39, of no fixed abode, appeared at South Sefton Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, June 7, and was remanded into custody to next appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday, July 5."
