A COUPLE who runs a café in Earlestown is being recognised for its charitable efforts to support Ukraine.

Marg and Ken Punshon, owners of Crumpets Café, set up a donation corner to help raise vital funding to support the people of Ukraine.

The couple began their fundraising mission at the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with more than £1200 raised so far.

Marg said: “It was a high topic within the café and conversations were built around what was happening in Ukraine and so we thought about what we could do.

“We’ve always been a great believer in looking at what we can do to help, not only within our own community but also worldwide.

“This particular disaster really struck us and the impact of it, so that was the start of our charity fund.

“We made some cakes and Ukrainian ribbons, and the donations just mounted up and still keep coming.”

The couple has since been invited to join the mayor at St Helens Town Hall on Monday, June 19, in recognition of their efforts to support Ukraine.

Marg added: “We both feel very privileged and honoured; the recognition is for the people who have donated so generously.”

Proceeds will go towards UK for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
