A POETRY night is taking place in Newton-le-Willows next week.

Fika Coffee and Home will host the poetry night as local poet Yvonne Mattocks will launch her book.

Yvonne published her first book in 2019 following the encouragement of family and friends and has since released a series of poetry books and stories.

The author and poet has an interest in local history and heritage and often writes poetry that reflects this passion.

She has since been invited to promote her book at Fika Coffee and Home on Walmsley Street in an official book launch event.

Yvonne said: "I have been writing poetry and stories for many years but have only in the last four years decided through the encouragement and support of family and friends, to put them on social media.

"Through further encouragement, I self-published my first poetry book called 'Beneath the Parapet' in 2019.

"My second book, 'At the Edge of the Silver Sea' has only recently come back from the publishers.

"Both books are doing well, and The Book Stop in St Helens has agreed to stock both books for me, which I am absolutely delighted about.

"I am very much looking forward to the Poetry night, but also a tad nervous.

"It'll be lovely though to share my words with others."

Debbie Makin, owner of Fika Coffee and Home, said: "We are excited to be hosting Yvonne’s poetry night at Fika Coffee and Home.

"Yvonne has been a great advocate for both Willows and Fika and when Yvonne mentioned she had had her first book published I instantly said to her to launch it with us.

"This is the first of many great events we hope to be organising and supporting, so please get involved."

The Poetry Night will take place at Fika Coffee and Home on Thursday, June 8, with doors opening at 6:30pm.
