A 91-YEAR-OLD with multiple health issues has completed a month-long walking challenge.

Catherine Brookfield from Newton-le-Willows set out on a 31-day walking challenge at the beginning of May and has completed her final lap today, Wednesday, May 31.

Catherine is partially deaf, suffering from partial sight loss, and lives with heart failure and COPD.

Despite this, Catherine was determined to support a deaf club she and her daughter Lynn Moore run in Ashton-in-Makerfield by participating in a month-long walking challenge.

Catherine raised more than £2000 for Ashton Deaf Club with her walking challenge.

She was cheered on by family, friends, and neighbours as she set off on her final day of the walking challenge.

Catherine, who has a comedic side and told a joke on each day of the month-long challenge, said: "It feels a bit sad that this is the last one because I’ve enjoyed doing it and we’ve raised quite a bit of money, which is what it was for.

"We’ve had quite a good response and the neighbours have encouraged me."

Catherine's daughter Lynn added: "At the beginning, I wasn’t sure that she’d manage it every single day; we used to stop halfway for her to have her inhaler and then walk back, but as time has gone on, she’s become fitter, and her colour’s come back.

"I feel immensely proud of her."

The 91-year-old also received a visit from St Helens Mayor Cllr Lynn Clarke, who awarded Catherine with the Mayor's Award in recognition of her effort to raise money and awareness for the deaf club.
