A GRATEFUL mum has thanked a kind stranger who jumped to the rescue to save her toddler son’s life when he was choking.

Heather Ford from Parr was in The Range café in St Helens yesterday (Tuesday, May 23) with her two-year-old son Joseph James – better known as JJ, when he started choking on his meal.

St Helens Star:

His dad tried to help, but JJ started turning blue.

That’s when a stranger jumped into action and saved JJ’s life.

Heather, 26, said: “We just went to The Range to get some bedroom furniture for JJ’s room and went to the café, that’s when he started choking on a sausage.

St Helens Star:

“His dad tried to help him but then he started going blue, I just panicked I didn’t know what to do and then this man just jumped up and took JJ off us and started trying to do stuff to help.

“He was pushing on his tummy and everything to try and help him, I just went blank it was awful.

“After all the fuss JJ swallowed it, which was a relief and he started going a normal colour but we can’t thank the man enough.

“We took him to the walk-in and other than having a raw throat he’s ok.

St Helens Star:

“I put it online as we didn’t get the man’s name and people told me who it was, I was so relieved to have thanked him and he’s coming to ours on Friday to see JJ.”

The man who came to JJ’s aid is Runcorn taxi-driver Peter Harrison, who lives in Widnes, he said: “Honestly I didn’t even think it’s all a blur to me.

“Me and the wife went to The Range and I usually go into the café and leave her to do her shopping which I did and I saw the little lad choking and the parents trying their best but him going blue.

St Helens Star:

“I don’t know first aid or anything and to be honest I didn’t even think, before I knew it I was up and smacking the lad’s back and trying out anything and everything I’ve seen on the tele to help him.

“Suddenly he went limp and I thought oh my god, but it was because all the fuss had made him swallow whatever it was.

“To be honest I felt funny after, I don’t know what made me get up, but I’m glad I did and when she [Heather] tracked me down today I was made up to hear JJ is ok except for a sore throat.

“I’m glad I helped, but it proper shook me up.”
