A MAN from Newton-le-Willows has challenged himself to run 100km in one day to support his local community centre.

Adam Broad decided to take on the run to help raise funding for Newton Community Centre.

The centre on Park Road South is self-funded and is able to remain open through charitable donations.

The challenge will see Adam head down to London where he will run the 100K with a finish at River Thames.

Discussing taking on the charity run, 44-year-old Adam said: "I’m getting my head around it but I’m confident that I’ll do it.

"Newton Community Centres does so much for the local community; they help each and every one of us in different ways and there are so many volunteers that give up their time to help run it, so I thought I’ll give up some of mine and raise money for them."

Adam went back into running during a weight loss programme last year and after losing six stones, he got an "itch" for running.

The electrician and construction worker also shared the importance of supporting local community centres and their significance in the area.

He added: "If we don’t support them, we’ll lose them and it’s not something you want to lose.

"People with mental health issues go there to have a chat and centres also keep stock for local foodbanks.

"They’re such a massive part of the community; without these community centres, where would these people go?"

Adam will take on his 100K run on Saturday, September 9.
