EXCITEMENT was seen throughout a high street in Newton-le-Willows as community groups held a coronation celebration.

A community parade took place along Newton High Street to mark King Charles III’s coronation, organised by Newton and Earlestown Community Group.

After making its way to Willow Park to continue coronation celebrations, the high street was still ‘booming’ as High Street Hive businesses held a Scarecrow Competition.

Valley Brass Band performed outside the Pied Bull, which got residents into the festive spirit.

Cllr Seve Gomez-Aspron MBE, Vice Chair of NECG, said: "We’ve not done a May event since 2019 and the long-established Willow Park Craft Fair succumbed to Covid restrictions, so as a group, NECG wanted to try and rejuvenate a similar event.

"It worked perfectly in partnership with the High Street Hive Scarecrow Display, and thousands turned out to see the parade.

"A massive thanks to our local police teams at Newton Police Station, our cadet units, Valley Brass Band, the amazing Samba Band, our Veterans Association, the classic cars that turned out, our brownies and other units, and most importantly the public who supported it in their thousands.

"The High Street and businesses were booming, and it looked picturesque and quintessentially British in reds, whites, and blues."

Several events are held on Newton High Street every year, with each event widely appreciated by residents.

Mike Roberts from Drinkworthy added: "The day was fantastic, and the weather was perfect.

"There was a lot of excitement along the high street for the parade, but once the parade had made its way down to the park, there was still a good buzz on the high street.

"We didn’t realise how special it was to people. We had a lot of people from surrounding towns come to the high street, saying what a fantastic place the high street is, so it was quite an honour to hear that kind of comment.

"When you get feedback like that, it’s very special and it’s quite a feeling."
