A MAN who attacked a police officer with a weapon has been jailed.

The force has welcomed the sentencing of Thomas McComish to seven years and nine months in prison after a police officer was assaulted in Fingerpost in December last year.

McComish, 33, of Morgan Street, Parr, St Helens, was jailed at Liverpool Crown Court today (Friday, March 31) after pleading guilty to two counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of a bladed article in a public place and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

At around 9.20pm on Monday, December 5, officers were informed that a man was on Parr Mount Street in possession of a knife and bottle.

A short time later, officers located the man close to The Mount Church on Traverse Street, where he was acting aggressively and still in possession of the weapons.

He was disarmed and detained, but an officer sustained a minor injury during the arrest.

Deputy Chief Constable Ian Critchley said: “Merseyside Police officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public from harm every day and understand the risks their role carries.

“They go into dangerous situations involving violent and aggressive offenders day in, day out because they are committed to protecting the people of Merseyside.

“But our officers should never have to tolerate violence against them when they are attempting to carry out their duties.

“Incidents such as this are absolutely unacceptable and have such a massive impact on the officers, their families and colleagues in the force.

“I hope that McComish uses his time in prison to reflect on his actions.

“My message to those who carry out violence against police is clear: please remember, whatever you think of us, one day you or your families may need our help too.”
