A GROUP of teenage boys in Newton-le-Willows have been awarded for their bravery after saving their friend’s life.

In April 2021, Connor McManus, Harley Molyneux, Bradley Poyser, and Cori-Lee McCarthy, who were between the ages of 12-14 at the time, were riding their BMXs over a local landmark known as the Mucky Mountains when Cori-Lee came off his bike, suffering a serious injury.

Cori-Lee quickly realised he was bleeding heavily, resulting in his friends calling 999.

The call handler, who kept the boys calm, advised them to download the What3Words app to get a precise location of the emergency.

Once police were able to locate them, Cori-Lee was immediately airlifted to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, highlighting the seriousness of the injury.

The injured youngster, who was 13 at the time, spent three days recovering at Alder Hey and was told he would have faced life-threatening injuries if it hadn’t been for his friends’ quick thinking.

Following the incident, St Helens Borough Council deputy leader and Newton-le-Willows East Ward councillor, Seve Gomez-Aspron MBE, nominated the group a North West Ambulance Service ‘Life Saver’ and Mayor of St Helens Borough ‘Good Citizen’ award.

The councillor had also nominated Bradley, Harley, and Connor for an award from the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society, which reward acts of bravery when life is at risk.

"I felt they needed the recognition they deserved and so it was my honour to apply on their behalf.

"They’re a credit to the town."

Emma Molyneux, mum to 15-year-old Harley, added: "We are all still very proud of Harley, Conner, and Bradley for how they reacted that day on the canal.

"I don't think they will ever fully understand how serious it could have been if they had not of all stayed calm and acted how they did."
