The future of a cricket club’s pitch appears to have been secured.

There had been fears land on which the pitch where Earlestown Cricket Club play could be sold.

The cricket club, which use the pitch at the Viaduct Sports and Social Club on Earle Street, had been concerned over the future of the 141-year-old club amid speculation on social media.

However, at a recent meeting between the cricket club and the Viaduct committee reassurances were given that the cricket pitch would not be sold.

Following the confirmation, Earlestown Cricket Club shared a statement, which read: "Following a meeting last week between two of our cricket members and the Viaduct committee, we have been assured that the cricket pitch is not part of the plans to sell off land to raise funds.

"We have also been told that our membership will be accepted and that we are as important as any other section in the club.

"They stated that the stories about cricket being removed from the site are simply not true and the committee claim they have no idea where these stories are coming from.

"All in all, the meeting was positive, and we will continue to monitor the situation.

"Once again, we thank everyone for the support shown, it has made a real difference and helped our position immensely."

The Star approached the Viaduct committee for a comment.
