RESIDENTS from a retirement village are organising a fundraiser following the earthquake in Turkey.

A group of residents from Reeve Court Retirement Village near Stratton Drive has been planning the event to raise money and collect donations for survivors of the devastating earthquake that occurred in Turkey earlier this year.

The fundraiser, which takes place this weekend, will see stalls set up at the retirement village, full of items to purchase, with proceeds to go towards their appeal.

A raffle, hampers, jewellery, and cake stalls are among what will be on offer at the fundraiser, with items left over to be donated to the cause.

Donations will be given to the Red Cross charity, which will send items to Turkey.

Margaret Sutherland is among the residents at the retirement village who has been organising the event, along with other residents between 70-80 years old.

Margaret said: "We saw all the pictures on the TV, and we were feeling for the poor people that have nothing and no houses; a lot of people have died, so we thought it would be a nice idea to do a fundraiser and we’ll be sending the money that we raise to the Red Cross to take over there.

"Because we’ve been given a lot of clothes, if we don’t sell them on the day, they will be parcelled up and given to the Red Cross.

"We’ve been quite busy collecting a lot of stuff; we’ll have about eight stalls on the day and we’re all feeling quite excited."

The fundraiser is one of many events held by residents, with their previous event for Ukraine last year raising nearly £2,000.

Steve Warburton, who has been the manager at Reeve Court for over a decade, added: "The residents at Reeve Court have always been happy to raise funds for disasters throughout the world with the current ones being The Turkish Earthquake and Ukrainian war. They are very passionate to help those in need.

"They also have a food bank collection alongside Charity shops to help the local community.

"I’ve been the manager at Reeve Court for 14 years and they always come to me with new fundraising ventures which engage everyone in the village."

The fundraiser will take place at Reeve Court Retirement Village this Saturday, April 1, at 12pm.
