STAR readers have expressed shock after a stabbing was reported in St Helens town centre.

Stabbing reported

Emergency services were called to Ormskirk Street at around 1.15am on March 5 after a report that a 20-year-old man had been stabbed.

Police say inquiries have established that the violence took place in an alleyway off Ormskirk Street, near to NatWest Bank.

They added it is believed the stabbing took place after a “disagreement” in the street.
 
Officers attended and an ambulance took the man to hospital for treatment.

Two men, both aged 19 years and from St Helens, were arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and affray.

They have since been conditionally bailed pending further inquiries.

Star readers voice knife crime concerns

Following the incident, Star readers shared their concerns over knife crime on the Star’s social media accounts, and called for tougher action from authorities in relation to those who carry knives.

Kerri Ann Harris wrote: “After everything that happened with Danny Fox you think this knife issue should have stopped by now it’s a joke”.

Menwhile, Danny Harrison added: “Sooner every bar has metal detector/ detector wands for the doormen the better”.

Annemaria Lewis said: “Whoever takes a blade out has every intentions of using it?”

Yvonne Sullivan wrote: “Knife crime in Britain alone is at an all time high. it’s so scary. they need to come down on these people so hard they won't know what's hit them”.

Meanwhile, John Bradbury added: “I would say what has happened to St Helens but it’s the same everywhere. Cowards can't fight and get on with it. the whole country is finished. No discipline, no justice, start at school, bring the discipline back”.

'Our investigation continues'

After Sunday’s incident, Detective Inspector Barbara Hebden said: “Our investigation continues and we are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or may have been passing on foot or in a vehicle. CCTV or dashcam footage may be vital so please check and send us anything which may assist.
 
“At this stage the incident is believed to have stemmed from some sort of disagreement between people in the street, so if you know anything please come forward. 
 
“Knife crime can have catastrophic consequences in our communities and although the victim is recovering in hospital, this could have easily been a fatal stabbing. We are determined to establish exactly what happened and put those responsible before the courts.”
