A SPEED limit change has been enforced on a route leading to a bridge where a number of accidents have happened, the Star understands.

Vulcan Bridge on Alder Root Lane, Newton-le-Willows, has had a series of incidents take place due to vehicles approaching the bridge at a speed and exceeding the height limit.

The issue was later raised with both St Helens Borough Council and Warrington Council to resolve the problem.

Drivers leaving Vulcan Village, heading into Winwick, were driving into a national speed limit zone.

A reduced speed limit of 30mph was discussed, which Newton-le-Willows East Ward councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron MBE has said has now been put in place in the area under St Helens Borough to match the speed limit on Wargrave Road.

The Star is told Warrington Council is also set to reduce the speed limit in its section.

Cllr Gomez-Aspron, who discussed the recurring issue with Warrington Borough Council, said: "Quite a lot of rural roads in and out of towns have a legacy speed limit of National Speed limit.

"In the Vulcan Village, it makes sense to reduce this past what are now very well-used playing fields, and in the run-up to the bridge that regularly gets crashed into.

"We can only change speed limits within our borough boundaries, which is at Newton Brook, but Warrington Council have kindly agreed to do the same on their side of the Boundary to reduce the speed past the bridges and golf course.

"Thank you to Cllr Cathy Mitchell, Winwick, and Burtonwood Councillor for liaising on this, and the extra package of low bridge warning signs, in order to make the route safer."
