PLANS for another retailer to move from the Hardshaw Centre to St Helens town centre’s high street have been confirmed.

Shoe Zone is relocating as part of the long-term regeneration plans for the town centre.

On the move

The ambitious plans will see the Hardshaw Centre flattened and so retailers based there are being given the opportunity to relocate by St Helens Council, which owns both of the town’s main shopping centres.

The Star has recently reported how Bonmarche has moved from the Hardshaw to Church Square.

Former sweet and flower stall traders have also made the switch, setting up as Infinity Occasions on Church Street, next to Greggs.

Now it has been confirmed that Shoe Zone will take up the previous Perfect Home unit located on Church Street. With work on the unit already underway, the retailer is expected to open its doors mid-March.

The store, which offers both big names and smaller brands, will take on the unit, which will be 2,677 sq ft. in size.

The relocation will add to the consolidation of the town centre’s retail area, which is battling against the decline seen by many areas around the country hit by the effects of online shopping, the growth of retail parks and the cost of living crisis.

The health of St Helens town centre remains a subject of intense debate among Star readers and businesses.

'A great addition'

Town centre leaders have painted a positive picture about the latest changes. In a statement, Steve Brogan, centre manager for Church Square Shopping Centre, said he believes the latest move is a boost for the high street: “We are thrilled to have Shoe Zone join the line-up of retail offering here at Church Square.

“Shoe Zone has something for all of our shoppers and will be a great addition.

“Work started on their unit on Monday and we’re very excited to see the finished product when they open their doors in a few weeks’ time.”

Meanwhile, Councillor Kate Groucutt, cabinet member for inclusive economy, business and skills on behalf of St Helens Borough Council believes it is a vote of confidence for the town centre regeneration plans that "businesses want to stay in the town and will help us to create a vibrant space with different options for people of all ages".

The Hardshaw Centre was purchased by St Helens Borough Council in 2022 and will make way for a new bus station, food market hall, hotel and offices as part of the regeneration of the town.

Bonmarche has moved into the former Select store in Church Square. Women's fashion chain Select will, in turn, move into the former Burton's building.
