WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our St Helens Star Camera Club group.

This week, Suzy Makin shares some of her favourite photographs.

Suzy is originally from Worsely in Manchester but after marrying someone from St Helens, she has lived in the town for several years.

Her interest in photography started during the Covid-19 pandemic when she was furloughed from work and she started taking pictures in her back garden.

When and why did you take up photography?

My real interest in photography began when I was stuck at home on furlough during the pandemic. Like many people, I really struggled with the guilt of being safe at home while others, including my husband Graham, were out working. I got stuck into voluntary work by phone but it wasn't enough to stop me worrying so Graham suggested that I get out into the garden with my phone and take some photos. I spent several months photographing flowers, bees and other insects and that’s what got me started. Graham then bought me a little camera and my interest in photography grew from there.

What do you love about taking pictures?

I love trying to capture the beauty of nature. In addition to distracting me from my worries, it reminds me to stop, look around me and appreciate the simple things in life.

Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?

My favourite place to take photos is my garden in spring and summer or anywhere with flowers and insects. I also love Spike Island and the numerous parks we have in St Helens.

What is your favourite subject matter and why?

Definitely insects and flowers because of how delicate they are. I love to capture photos of birds and wild animals - just in the zoo for now though! I also like sunsets and buildings too.

What do you enjoy about being part of our Camera Club on Facebook?

I love being part of the Camera Club as I enjoy looking at photos taken by others and getting inspiration and guidance from them. I hope one day to be in a position where I can advise or inspire others too.

If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be?

I would love to go to Africa one day and photograph animals in the wild.
