FIFTEEN establishments in St Helens are serving customers with a one or zero hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency.

From a score of zero to five, food hygiene ratings are given to food handling businesses after an inspection has assessed how well they comply with food safety laws.

The rating reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of the inspection by the local authority.

In St Helens, 13 establishments that handle food have a one-out-of-five hygiene rating while two businesses have the lowest score of zero, in their latest inspection.

If businesses are awarded a score lower than five, the local authority officer will explain what action they can take to improve.

If a business’s hygiene standards are very poor and there is an imminent risk to public health, officers may stop part of the business or close it down completely until it is safe to recommence.

Food establishments like restaurants, cafes, and takeaways are usually inspected every six months, while other food-handling businesses like newsagents may have a couple of years between inspections.

In Wales and Northern Ireland, it is mandatory to display a food hygiene rating in a food establishment although this is only voluntary in England.
