A COMMUNITY gym is providing a week-long offer to help the vulnerable during the cold weather.

Evolution Fitness gym, based on Duncan Street in St Helens, moved from its former HAMMA premises on North Road to expand the business and reach more customers in 2021.

Owner Mike Garner described the facility as a "real community gym" that is an inclusive place for everyone.

Putting funds back into the community, Evolution also sponsors local rugby teams as well as St Helens 10k, the Pride of St Helens Awards, and the Steve Prescott and Standing Tall Foundations.

Following the recent snowy weather and freezing temperatures, Mike and Evolution staff are offering free hot food and drinks to the homeless, vulnerable, or those struggling for whatever reason.

Lasting throughout the week, Mike said the gym will also act as a warm hub where people can come in for a chat and get away from the cold.

Mike, 38, said: "At this moment in time, it feels like there is not a lot of support for people so as a local business and someone who is born and bred in this town, I just want to give something back.

"Until Sunday we're offering warm tea, coffee, or a butty for free. Anyone can come in, have a sit-down and a chat, and just have a warm place where they can talk to people.

"I've been through hard times myself, so I know what it's like to have nothing.

"If it wasn't for the community, we wouldn't be open. We have a lot of members now so that's why I want to help."

Evolution Fitness is offering free hot drinks and food until Sunday, January 22.
