A PROJECT aimed at bringing more visitors to Newton-le-Willows is set to pilot on the high street.

The initiative, formed by volunteers from the community, is aimed at improving the appearance of Newton High Street to attract visitors, support local businesses, and bring a sense of pride to residents.

The project, named Newton in Bloom, will pilot on the high street, and if successful, there is potential for the initiative to be introduced into other areas of Newton-le-Willows.

Businesses and organisations have been discussing funding for the initiative, with further details to be confirmed later in the year.

Highlighting that the project is in its early days of planning, Catherine Donellan, Lyme and Wood Country Park secretary and member of Newton in Bloom, said: "We’re currently doing our research and looking for suppliers, and it’s a case of getting it all together and aiming to get it done

"We’re hoping to run the high street this year as a pilot, and if all goes well, it will then expand further into Newton-le-Willows.

"If this is a success, we would then like to help other areas and give them support on how to get it started.

"We want to bring money to local businesses, encourage people to visit, and by making the high street look nice, it will give you a sense of pride for your town."

Commenting on the community-led initiative, Newton-le-Willows East Councillor and Deputy Police and Crime Comissioner for Merseyside Jeanie Bell added: "I was approached by Catherine about the Newton Bloom project they have designed to see if I could provide support.

"The project is in its early stages and the council have worked to help secure some sponsorship and some logistical support.

"It's wonderful to see community-led initiatives like this and I am really excited to see what the end results are, the group and Catherine are so passionate about Newton and take huge pride in their town, environment, and community.

"I am really looking forward to seeing their hard work pay off and I am always happy to support any community initiatives such as this."

The project is hoped to come into force by Spring, starting with hanging baskets installed across Newton High Street.

A pamphlet detailing the plans is aimed to be delivered to high street residents; offering locals the option to express their views on the proposed plans.
