A GROUP of young netballers took part in a mountain climb over the weekend in memory of Violet-Grace Youens.

During Organ Donation Week and on what would have been the day before Violet Grace's 10th birthday, St Helens Bees Netball Club climbed Moel Famau in Wales on Saturday, October 1.

With netballers as young as three to seven taking part, the fundraising walk was set up to remember Violet's life and raise money for the foundation set up in her name.

After Violet was killed by a stolen speeding car in 2017, her grieving family founded 'Violet Grace's Gift' to promote organ donation and help local hospitals, community projects, bereaved parents, and seriously ill children.

Despite the tragedy, the Youens family has been able to create something positive as their foundation has gone on to save lives and their campaigning has successfully changed sentencing guidelines in the form of Violet's Law.

During Organ Donation Week, Connie Miller, one of the parents at St Helens Bees, said that their fundraising was a perfect way to support the Youens family and give something back to the community.

Connie said: "The Bees Netball Club was set up around a year ago, and we have done small fundraising to reinvest into the club.

"This was the first time we have raised money for an outside foundation and thought Violet Grace's Gift would be the best charity as it's really close to home and the case shook the whole community.

"The walk was also about teaching the girls how to give back and support the local community.

"The girls did amazing and we were so proud to see them get involved and make it to the top."

With Violet just 4 years old when she passed away, it was noted how she too could have been a St Helens Bee but didn't get that opportunity.

Showing what a "small club can do for the good of the community", the Bees Moel Famua walk exceeded expectations and raised more than £1,700 for Violet Grace's Gift.
