SAINTS match-winner Jack Welsby admitted Sunday’s win at Wakefield was not the best performance - but they got the job done to move six points clear.
Welsby nailed a golden-point winner at Belle Vue after rallying from a 12-0 deficit in awful conditions.
That, combined with Wigan’s defeat at Leeds, sees Saints march on with their sights on finishing top,
On the winner Welsby said: “It was fortunate but that shape is something we work on if Jonny (Lomax) gets closed down.
“He fumbled it and the defence got a bit excited and rushed out which gave me plenty of time to get set up and make a good connection.
“As soon as it left my boot I knew it was over.”
The basement side looked as though they were going to shock the leaders, and even when Saints levelled Trinity still had the first shot at a Golden Point winner.
“We were miles off, myself included, so to come away with the win just shows the resilience we have got there in the dressing room.”
