A DEAFNESS centre is hosting a summer fayre to raise money for its organisation.

Deafness Resource Centre in St Helens is inviting members of the community to attend the fayre on Saturday.

The event will see local talent and stalls on site, with family-friendly activities such as face painting, tombola, and games provided.

Ice creams and refreshments will also be available at the summer event.

Tanya McGibbon, children, young people, and family service manager said: "We used to do family events prior to covid, but it’s the first summer fayre we’ve done for a good few years.

"It’s fantastic and really good for the community. It’ll be lovely to see people back in the building and to regain that community feel that we want and have had as a hub."

The community hub has been established since 1928 and offers a variety of services to deaf people and their families.

These include advocacy, equipment, and interpreter services across St Helens and the city region.

The centre is ready to welcome back the community following a period of no events and online services.

Tanya added: "Throughout the pandemic, we had to change the way we were working, just like many other charities and organisations.

"Where we could, we continued to provide services but in a different way; we went online and zoom became our best friend.

"It was particularly difficult for our clients, especially with the introduction of mask wearing as a lot of our clients lip read, so wearing masks completely cut off communication methods.

"It’s been a long process to get to where we are now, where we can have an event and invite the community in."

The summer fayre takes place on Saturday at the Deafness Resource Centre at Dentons Geen Lane from 11-3pm.
