TWO women have been arrested in connection with the theft of £52 worth of goods - and the alleged assault of a shopworker.

Police in St Helens say a large amount of chocolate and meat products - worth about £52 - were stolen from the Nisa store on Elephant Lane, Thatto Heath.

Two women from Thatto Heath were arrested in connection with the theft and on suspicion of assault after a staff member was injured during this incident.

In a statement police said: "Community officers will continue to arrest and take positive action against those who choose to steal from local businesses, or abuse and assault staff.

"This behaviour is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our community."
