ST HELENS MP's have shared their thoughts on the resignation of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister.

Conor McGinn and Marie Rimmer commented after more than 50 government ministers and aides had quit by Thursday, July 7 - all but forcing the Prime Minister to leave his post.

The news follows a string of controversies in No 10 which culminated with the allegations that Mr Johnson knew about claims of sexual misconduct against Chris Pincher before appointing him as his deputy chief whip.

Conor McGinn and Marie Rimmer both welcomed the news of the Prime Minister's resignation, but stated it "should have happened long ago".

Labour MP for St Helens North, Conor McGinn said: "Boris Johnson needs to go now. His resignation should have happened long ago, and those who have been complicit in propping him up should be ashamed.

"Under the Conservatives, our communities in St Helens North have been forced to endure 12 years of economic stagnation, decimated public services, hollow promises and now chaos at a moment of acute national crisis. The damage they have caused is profound.

"Our country doesn’t need a new Tory at the top, we need a proper change of government and a fresh start for Britain under Labour."

Similarly, Labour MP for St Helens South & Whiston, Marie Rimmer said: "It has taken far too long, but finally Boris Johnson has done the right thing. His behaviour has been unfit for the office he holds.

"It is ridiculous that Boris Johnson thinks that he can carry on in an interim capacity for months. Boris Johnson needs to go and he needs to go now.

"Changing the prime minister will only do so much. All the people that propped Boris Johnson up, knowing he was unfit for the role, are still in office.

"The country need a new Government and a fresh start for Britain."
