THE Red Arrows will be among the highlights of the 2022 Southport Air Show this weekend - and you may also be able to catch a glimpse of the famous display team in skies nearby St Helens.

The Royal Air Force's Aerobatic Team is due at Southport for the show at 4pm on Saturday.

But before that their flight path fleetingly takes in areas that surround St Helens such as Pimbo, Crawford, Bickerstaffe and Ormskirk.

Timings and the flight path may be altered due to the weather.

Red Arrows flight path

The website military-airshows.co.uk states that the jets will fly over Skelmersdale/Pimbo - a short distance from Rainford at 3.58pm - before passing over Ormskirk at 3.59pm.

The pilots will arrive at the air show at 4pm in diamond formation and perform their aerobatic flying manoeuvres to people attending the Southport Air Show.

There will also be a performance on Sunday.

The display team is known for streaming red, blue and white smoke across the sky as they perform their stunning routine.

It is one of the world most outstanding aerobatic display teams and is the public face of the RAF - showcasing its speed, agility and precision. With its stunning diamond nine formation, the Red Arrows have been displaying since 1965.

Southport Airshow 2022

Organisers of the 2022 Southport Air Show - which takes place on Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10 have described it as a landmark year in the event’s illustrious history.

Thousands of aviation lovers and visitors are expected to head to the resort.

2022 marks the first time in seven years that the Red Arrows display team has performed at the show over both days and the first time in four years that they have made an appearance altogether.

Other highlights will include an RAF Typhoon, while a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will also making a much-welcomed return to Southport’s golden coastline.

'Iconic year'

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and skills, said: “2022 is truly an iconic year for the Southport Air Show with the Red Arrows appearance to help us celebrate our triumphant return to hosting huge events in the borough.

“People from all over the UK and Europe make the trip to Southport Air Show, such is its illustrious place in the aviation world and we know from ticket sales already that we can expect huge crowds this July.

“We know how much of a major attraction the Red Arrows can have and we are delighted to have them perform over both days. This announcement will mean ticket sales will skyrocket and I’d urge everyone to ensure they snap up a ticket quickly before they are sold out!”

This year for the first time, general admission for under 16 years is free.
