POLICE were called after a large group of Travellers set up camp at a Northwich leisure complex.

Officers were notified when more than 30 caravans made their way onto the sports fields at the Moss Farm Leisure Complex at about 9pm last night (June 19).

An eviction notice has now been served to the group ordering them to leave by 11am on June 21.

A Northwich Cricket Club spokesman expressed his concern about the group after attempts were made to access the club's toilets and showers.

He said: "We have had to cancel all cricket activity until the travellers have moved on.

"They have already tried to get in to use our facilities so we have had to lock all our gates.

"This means that matches for seniors, juniors and ladies cannot take place this week at Northwich CC.

"We cannot guarantee the security of our premises or the safety of our members, players and visitors.

"What is more concerning is the absence of a police presence. They were racing motorbikes and quad bikes around the fields until the early hours."

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "At 9pm on Sunday, June 19, police were called to reports of an unauthorised encampment at Moss Farm, Northwich.
