Newton-le-Willows scarecrow competition is returning to the town ahead of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Businesses, schools, and members of the community have taken part by creating their own Jubilee-themed scarecrows.

The competition takes place from Thursday June 2 - Sunday June 5, however, entries have already been made with scarecrows popping up around the town.

St Mary's Infant School became the first entry of this year's competition, with their dedicated efforts of creating the royal family.

Lucy Moore, reception class teacher and art lead at the school, said: "We decided we’d do the whole Royal family. Every year group has had a different family member to do and they’ve really enjoyed doing it- it’s been fabulous!

"We entered last time during lockdown and the children really loved it.

"We’ve really enjoyed the community coming together and all the comments that we’ve had and parents have commented- it’s just been really lovely.”

Another entry was made by The District CE Primary School, which also competed in the previous scarecrow contest.

Lauren Hutchinson, office supervisor at the primary school, said: "Newton and Earlestown community group hosted a scarecrow competition a couple of years ago and it's something the school love to get involved with.

"We have our scarecrow Queen and Corgi and the children have loved taking pictures with her outside our school."

Hair Couture has also joined in with its entry, with mannequins placed in front of shop window.

Sharon Schofield, salon owner, said: "I do like creating things, so once I set my mind on something I just crack on.

"The last scarecrow I did, I did at home because it was lockdown. I did it all on the front of my home and just redid the salon look with scarecrows.”

“It’s nice to do stuff and the clients like it- loads of people have been passing the window!"
