VOLUNTEER groups have been diligently designing a host of Jubilee-inspired crochets to celebrate the Queen's 70 years on the throne.

Members of Garswood's 'Knit and Natter' group and Haydock's 'UnTangled St Helens' have been busy working on the crochets and post-box toppers, which are starting to crop up around their area.

They have been created by volunteers in the run-up to the bank holiday weekend on Thursday, June 2 - Sunday, June 5, to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's reign and get residents into the jubilee spirit.

Made up of around 25 retirees, the Knit and Natter group get together and knit commemorative designs throughout the year for events such as Christmas, Halloween, or Remembrance Day.

Their project is often commended by people for brightening up their streets and the group received a Mayor's Good Citizen Award in January for their services to the community.

Ann Cooper, founder of Knit and Natter, said: "Most of the designs have come from Elaine Murphy and they're marvellous.

"A lot of effort goes into them and everybody seems to love them. One person has already asked can he buy them from us after the Jubilee weekend."

Created just before lockdown in 2020, volunteers at UnTangled St Helens, have also decided to start displaying their designs in the community following an "amazing" response to their Ukrainian designs.

Bernie Fenney, founder of the group, said that it was created to bring  together a love of crochet, colour and community to support mental wellbeing, social isolation and social anxiety.
