POLICE across Merseyside after a cyclist was mown down by a car in a suspected deliberate act in Knowsley.

The hit and run happened in Kirkby last night (Sunday, May 23).

Shortly before 9.30pm officers were made aware of an incident on Aldford Road near to the junction of Rockford Avenue.

It was reported that a cyclist, a man in his 20s, was hit by a black Ford Fiesta car.

Emergency services took the cyclist to hospital for serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening at this stage.

The cyclist remains in hospital in a serious condition, police say.

In a statement Merseyside Police said extensive enquiries into the incident are ongoing, but police believe that the cyclist "has been deliberately targeted by the driver of the car".

Officers are reviewing CCTV footage in a bid to establish the circumstances and identify the offender.

What police are saying

Detective Inspector Barbara Hebden said: "Police are investigating following an incident last night which left a man with serious injuries.

"Our enquiries are in the early stages but we believe that he was deliberately targeted by the driver of the car, and we are working hard to find the person responsible and bring them to justice.

“I would ask anyone who may have seen a black Ford Fiesta being driven around the Aldford Road area last night to contact us. We are also interested in hearing from any drivers in the area who may have captured dashcam footage of the incident, or anyone with any footage or information to come forward.
