A POLICE officer was injured after being driven at by a quad bike rider

Police are appealing for witnesses after the officer was struck with a quad bike in Newton-le-Willows, on Tuesday night, May 17.

At around 6pm it was reported that an officer saw a man riding a black quad bike on the pavement of Borron Road.

The quad bike rider then rode in the direction of the officer, who quickly stepped back to avoid a serious collision.

He suffered a minor injury to his hand which did not require hospital treatment.

The offender then rode off at speed towards Crow Lane and turned left.

An investigation is underway including CCTV and witness inquiries in the area.

The incident happened on the same evening that an officer was seriously injured after being dragged along a road by a van on Hewitt Avenue, Old Eccleston.

The two incidents were separate.

Chief Inspector Paul Holden said: “This was a nasty incident where the offender has shown no regard for the officer’s safety. Thankfully his injury was minor, but it could have been substantially worse.

“We have already seen this week in St Helens the dangers our officers face in their efforts to protect the public from harm, but it is never acceptable for officers to be subject to violence as they carry out their duties.

“We are determined to bring this offender to justice and I would appeal for any witnesses and residents in the area to check your CCTV and dashcam footage to see if it has captured the offender.

“Your information or evidence could prove vital as we seek to bring the man responsible to justice.”
