A NINE-year-old girl has won a poetry competition and has her work displayed in a show home celebrating Prescot’s Shakespeare connection.

Miller Homes launched the competition with the pupils of St. Mary’s and St. Paul’s CE Primary School in Prescot to celebrate its latest development Sonnet Gate, inspired by the town’s Shakespeare connection and the new Shakespeare North Playhouse.

The competition was launched to encourage the children to write a poem about their own home and what they love about it.

The winner of the competition was Gabrielle Inwood, aged nine from Prescot.

Her poem ‘Home’ is now showcased within the Sonnet Gate show home as part of the interior design.

Honourable mentions of the homebuilder’s competition include Halle Haruna, aged nine, who came second place with her poem, ‘My Home, My Home’ and taking third place was Ben Dickson-Moore, aged 10, whose poem was titled ‘My Sweet Home.’ Rachel Ball, teacher at St. Mary’s and St. Paul’s, said: “The children had great fun writing and illustrating their poems, and it was very hard to pick the top three.”

Clare Noakes, Sales Director for Miller Homes North West, added: “Leaning into the local links to Shakespeare, we felt it would be a great opportunity for the winner to have their lovely poem displayed in a show home, where many visitors will be reading it as they look around.

“We’d like to thank St. Mary’s and St. Paul’s school for working with us on this exciting project. We hope those who come to visit our Sonnet Gate show home will enjoy reading Gabrielle’s lovely words.”

Gabrielle’s winning poem reads:

Home is where I lay,

Home is where two dogs play,

It is where I start my day,

It’s my favourite place to stay.

Home is where I always have a wide smile,

Home is where me and my friends play a while.

Home is where I love to eat,

Home is where we will all meet.

It is where I invite my quirky friends,

It is a time we don’t want to end.

We have family pizza night,

It is a time we never fight.

My family cheer me up and make me laugh out loud.

I know I make them proud.

Home.
