SHOCKED Star readers are leaving messages of support to a police officer recovering from serious injuries after being hit by a van.

Shortly after 8pm last night, Tuesday, May 18, it was reported a backpack, suspected to contain cannabis, was in the road on Hewitt Avenue, Old Eccleston.

Police attended and while one constable was retrieving the bag at about 8.15pm, he approached a white Ford Transit van whose occupants were acting suspiciously nearby. Police say the van was then driven at the officer, colliding with him, before being driven away from the scene.

The officer sustained serious injuries to his shoulder, right arm and right leg. He has been taken to hospital where his condition is described as stable.
