A CONTROLLED explosion was carried out after the bomb squad were called following the discovery of an artillery shell in a garage.

The explosive was found in a property garage on Laurel Avenue, Eccleston on Monday afternoon, April 25. 

Police attended the address after receiving a report of the incident.

A cordon was put in place on Walmesley Road playing fields, as the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team carried out a controlled explosion.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm officers were in attendance in St Helens following the discovery of a suspected artillery shell yesterday, Monday, April 25.

"Officers were called at 3.50pm after the device was discovered in a garage of a house on Laurel Avenue, Eccleston.

"A cordon was set up around Walmesley Road playing fields while EOD carried out a controlled explosion to dispose of it safely."
