RAM raiders smashed into a convenience store in the early hours of this morning before escaping with cash.

Police were called at 4.05am to reports that three men were breaking into Morrisons Daily convenience store on Sutton Park Drive, Sutton.

Money was stolen from the cash machine.

It was reported that the suspects drove off in a black car towards Sandringham Drive, police say.

Officers attended and a white flat-bed vehicle was found abandoned at the scene.

It has been recovered for forensic examination.

Pictures taken at the scene show the roller shutters ripped open and windows smashed.

St Helens Star:

A strong police presence is in the area this morning, while forensic enquiries take place.

Detective Inspector Lisa Milligan said: "We are in the early stages of the investigation and keen to speak to any witnesses who saw suspicious activity in and around Sutton Park Drive in the early hours of this morning, or if you were passing and have captured dashcam footage then please get in touch.

“We are determined to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Detective Inspector Milligan added: “It's awful that a local business has been targeted in this way, especially as it affects residents who live in the community who rely on their local convenience store.

“The incident has caused damage to the premises which is a huge inconvenience and distress to not only people who work incredibly hard to support its community, but also people who depend on it and shop there.

"I urge you to come forward if you know anything and we will take action."
