A BAR owner in St Helens is eagerly anticipating a future without coronavirus restrictions after a challenging two years.

Like many in the hospitality industry, Paul Whittaker, owner of TANK bar, had to adapt to a range of pandemic restrictions that put the future of the business in doubt.

As an intimate bar and music venue on Westfield Street, the team at TANK struggled to operate amid socially distancing regulations, substantial meal rules, and music curfews.

However, adapting to the surreal reality, staff wore masks, distanced customer tables, committed to table service, and took advantage of government grants to keep people safe and keep the business afloat.

With millions of people now vaccinated against coronavirus and the country looking to be past the peak of the Omicron wave, Paul is now looking forward to a future that begins to resemble some sense of normality.

While still concerned to keep everyone safe, the reduced threat of restrictions enables TANK to plan for the future, organise events and operate how they always intended.

After a stop-start two years, there are hopes that the hospitality industry can kick on this year, entertain guests and create an exciting event calendar that brings people into the town centre.

Looking to the future Paul, 30, said: "Hopefully there'll be a buzz about town with the new plans being laid out and the finishing off of the Imperial food court.

"We need to support each other for bars like us to stay around."

Future events planned at TANK:

On Sunday, February 13, the bar will be hosting a speed dating 'Singles Night' for different age ranges.

The "relaxed" night will involve a 'red light green light' system, with all participators given a free shot for their Dutch courage and a sticker on their availability.

Comedy nights are planned to be hosted on the last Thursday of the month, starting on Thursday, Febraury 24.

There are hopes that local comics will come to test out new material at TANK and the night can develop into a bigger event on the regional circuit.

Live music starts back up on Saturday, March 26 with local band BANDIT & BUTLER performing a mix of covers with an "upbeat twist".

Award-wining Baldys Pies will be back to taste for an event on Friday, April 8, while quizzes, bingo and game nights are planned to be a regular occurence.

TANK also hope to host acts for St Helens' WestFest as well as organising another popular Oktoberfest towards the end of the year.
