WARRINGTON Borough Council refused to confirm whether it would actively seek to clean filthy road signs across the town.

It comes after a Warrington Guardian reader said the grime coating signs ‘does not reflect well on the town’, especially one bidding for city status.

In a letter send to the Warrington Guardian, Penketh resident Gary Slater said that ‘civic pride demands that something is done’.

But when pressed on the issue, the council said the issues would be picked up through routine inspections rather than confirming that it would send teams out to clean them.

In his letter, Mr Slater said: “Has anyone else noticed how dirty many of the road signs in Warrington are?

“Some look like they have not been cleaned for years.

“These pictures were taken on Cromwell Avenue, one of the town’s main thoroughfares, but could have been taken anywhere in Warrington.

“Instead of spending money on a doomed bid for city status, perhaps the council could set up a task force for cleaning these signs and cutting back the trees and branches that obscure them.

“If – because of Government cuts – the council can no longer afford to maintain these signs properly, then perhaps willing parish councils could take on some of the responsibility.

“The current state of many of these signs does not reflect well on the town. Civic pride demands that something is done.”

The council was directly asked by the Warrington Guardian whether it would be looking to clean road signs around the borough over coming months.

In response, a spokesman said: “We recognise the importance of road signs and will pick up issues with their maintenance via our regular inspections of the highway network.

“However, members of the public are also able to report dirty or obstructed signs.”
