HERE is a look at five developments in St Helens which were given the go-ahead during 2021.

Moss Nook

St Helens Star:

Plans for 258 new homes on the site of former industrial land were approved by St Helens Borough Council.

Housebuilder Taylor Wimpey has been granted planning permission for the development off Sutton Road which forms part part of the wider Moss Nook site.

Taylor Wimpey is developing the first phase of the site, which will contain a series of two, three and four-bedroom homes suited to a variety of needs.

Work to transform the derelict site is underway.

Glass Futures

St Helens Star:

The plans for a pioneering £54million glass research and innovation facility in St Helens have been unanimously approved by the council.

The planning application was prepared and submitted by developer and landowner Network Space, on behalf of not-for-profit research and technology organisation Glass Futures, to build the 160,000 sq ft Global Centre of Excellence at the former United Glass site in Peasley Cross.

The planning consent confirms the delivery of the state-of-the-art facility, together with what will be the world’s first openly accessible test and trial furnace operation, to St Helens.

Construction will start in January.

Cowley Hill Works development

St Helens Star:

Plans to regenerate the redundant land at the Cowley Hill Works and deliver a high-quality residential-led neighbourhood have passed their final planning hurdle.

The scheme was approved by the planning committee in March and the Section 106 agreement between the local authority and the developer has now been completed, with outline planning permission now secured.

A joint venture between land specialists BXB and developer Promenade Estates, the project will deliver up to 1,100 new homes, a hotel and commercial space off College Street, north of the town centre.

Home Bargains warehouse

St Helens Star:

The plans for a Home Bargains warehouse on green belt land in Bold were given the nod after a public inquiry.

The major retailers' proposals for a distribution centre have been given their backing by Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

Plans for Omega West, in Bold, which is on the boundary of St Helens and Warrington have been approved after a public inquiry by the Planning Inspectorate.

It follows St Helens Borough Council’s own Planning Committee approving the plans, which attracted opposition, in October last year.

Parkside

St Helens Star:

The first phase of the regeneration of the former Parkside colliery site has been given the go-aheadafter a public inquiry.

The first stage of the project in Newton-le-Willows, which is expected to bring almost 500 jobs during the construction of its first phase and the potential of more than 1,300 new jobs in the completed buildings, has been given the green light.

The plans for Parkside were given the nod after being called in for review by the government in December 2019.The first phase of development will see 93,000 square metres of new employment space built on the site, which will bring a range of jobs offering a variety of skills.

The announcement also saw approval of the Parkside Link Road, which will be pivotal in unlocking the sites full potential for future development and help to support the local environment.
